Suri’s many volunteer activities have focused on her dedication to service, which she has learned is “both a privilege and a responsibility.” One of her passions is the International Health Collective Baja Clinic Quality Improvement Project. She has also volunteered with Flying Samaritans, where she works with youth in public health, including dental care and pharmacy services. As a leader in MEDS at HMP3, she has coordinated an annual conference for college students in the San Diego area who are contemplating a career in medicine.

Suri’s interest in medicine was sparked by attending her grandfather’s medical appointments in order to help with translation. Even at the age of 12 she became aware of the language barriers in healthcare. She came to realize that rather than being a limitation, her immigrant background is “a meaningful hardship” that taught her “resilience and perseverance.” In high school she worked at Jamba Juice to help out her family, and also helped take care of her younger brother when her parents were working. Her growing responsibilities led her to ask “Why not?” when seeking
opportunities and fostering new initiatives.

Suri plans to pursue a master’s in public health before applying to medical school. Her goal is to become a family physician with the intention of putting into practice what she has learned about “the power of listening, teaching and advocating for communities that may otherwise be overlooked.” She is enrolled in Seventh College.
